CHMI 3016 - Biochemistry I

Year: 3; Elective: No; Lab: 3 hours per week; Lecture: two 1.5 h lectures per week; Prerequisite: CHMI2426

Course Description: The aim of this course is to provide students with a basic knowledge of biochemistry and an introduction to modern concepts of molecular biology. Topics discussed in this course include structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids; enzyme kinetics; overview of cloning and gene isolation. A problem-solving approach will be employed and emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of experimental results. In order to maximize the opportunities for students to think critically, analytically and creatively, take-home assignments in the form of case studies and paper interpretation will be used as part of the learning assessment.

CHMI 3017 - Biochemistry II

Year: 3; Elective: No; Lab: 3 hours per week; Lecture: two 1.5 h lectures per week; Prerequisite: CHMI3016

Course Description: This course is an introduction to the metabolic reactions in the cells, which produce and utilize energy. The course material includes metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and nucleotides, and regulation of metabolism. In addition, it covers the basic processes that govern pathways of information flow. Emphasis is placed on mechanisms of biosynthesis of proteins and nucleic acids and how these processes are controlled and integrated with the metabolism of the cell.

CHMI2426 - Organic Chemistry I

Year: 2; Elective: No; Lab: 3 hours per week; Lecture: two 1.5 h lectures per week; Prerequisite: CHMI1006/1007

Course Description: This is an introductory course that deals primarily with the basic principles to understand the structure and reactivity of organic molecules. Emphasis is on substitution and elimination reactions and chemistry of the carbonyl group. Topics included are structure and bonding, nomenclature, molecular representations, stereochemistry, and an introduction to the chemistry of alkanes, alkenes, alkyl halides, alcohols, epoxides, amines and carbonyl compounds.

CHMI2427 - Organic Chemistry II

Year: 2; Elective: No; Lab: 3 hours per week; Lecture: two 1.5 h lectures per week; Prerequisite: CHMI1006/1007

Course Description: This course is an introductory course in organic chemistry, and a continuation of the topics discussed in CHMI2426. The course focuses on nomenclature, stereochemistry, chemical analysis and reactivity of a few classes of organic compounds. It also includes an introduction to structural characterization of organic compounds by IR and NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
